Research Scientist R&D Flavor Ingredients Fermentation - Erlanger, KY

MAIN FUNCTION:
We are looking for a self-motivated Fermentation Scientist who will focus on research and development on fermentation products related to flavoring ingredients and pigments. The candidate will collaborate with junior and senior scientists to design, execute, and analysis fermentation experiments, report experiment results, assist in scale-up trials and downstream recovery processes, with broad responsibilities and opportunities of working with a growing team in a collaborative work environment.

KEY SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
  • M.S. in Biosystems Engineering, Chemical engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related fields with 3+ years of related work experience, or Ph.D in related fields with industry experience is plus.
  • Solid knowledge of fermentation, biochemistry and microbiology. Broad knowledge with molecular biology and analytical chemistry is desirable.
  • Hands-on experience in aseptic operation, microbial techniques with a variety of microorganisms including bacteria, yeast and fungi, fermentation process development especially for precision fermentation with lab-scale bioreactors.
  • Hands-on experience in sample preparation and chromatography analysis (e.g. HPLC, UPLC, LCMS, GCMS).
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform experiments independently, pay attention to details and document detailed scientific studies and observations, and deliver accurate, representative and repeatable results.
  • Proficient in standard computer programs (e.g. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, MATLAB).
  • Ability to deliver clear, compelling, and effective technical presentations
  • Strong organization, trouble-shooting, and quantitative analysis skills are critical
  • Excellent collaboration, communication (oral and written), and multitasking skills.
  • Experience working in accordance with good laboratory practices and adhere to safe standards and practices.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK PERFORMED:
  • Work closely with Manager and team members in experimental design and execution.
  • Handle and work with a variety of microorganisms including bacteria, yeast and fungi. Prepare and maintain stocks of microbial strains.
  • Develop seed preparation, inoculation, fermentation, sampling and assays protocols.
  • Design and conduct small scale fermentation experiments on a solid support or in shake flasks and 1-10L bench top fermenters based on literature, knowledge and experience. Identify key factors affecting fermentation performance.
  • Apply Design of Experience approach in optimization experiments to improve fermentation performance.
  • Perform microbiological, biochemical and chemical analysis as required.
  • Develop detailed records of experiment. Collect, process and analyze data.
  • Write research reports, prepare and deliver technical presentations.
  • Prepare tech transfer documents and provide technical support for scale up as needed
  • Assist in downstream processing development as needed.
  • Maintain laboratory suppliers and instruments.
  • This position will contribute as a member of a growing team focused on the development and commercialization of food ingredients. Collaboration with flavorists, analytical scientists, chemists, sensory scientists and application scientists is required.
  • This position may require some travel.
